Q1: What type of bin does the sensor require?

The sensor can be installed in any bin type, it has been successfully tested even in underground bins. The only ‘limitation’ is that the front of the sensor must be unobstructed.

Q2: What type of waste can the sensor be used for?

Any solid waste type is supported.

Q3: What about liquid waste?

We can support liquid waste using a different type of sensor

Q4: How is the sensor powered?

The sensor is powered with disposable batteries. With 3 measurement per day they can last up to 5 years.

Q5: How does the sensor communicate with the main system?

Each sensor uses 2G/3G communication to transfer measurements to Binalive servers

Q6: 3G communication? This sounds expensive…

Due to large SIM volumes, we have already secured very competitive prices from Mobile Carriers, much cheaper than regular retail prices. What’s more, we take the hassle of managing the telco costs from you by managing the cost of each sensor ourselves.

Q7: Do I need to form contracts with mobile service providers?

No, we take care of everything.

Q8: What does the sensor measure?

Each sensor sends data about: bin fill level, bin temperature, mobile signal strength, battery status, bin lid inclination which can affect the validity of a measurement.

Q9: What is the distance range the sensor can measure?

The measurement range is 10 to 300cm.

Q10: What about environmental operation conditions?

The sensor can operate in temperatures ranging from -20oC to 70oC

Q11: Does the sensor need any maintenance?

No, Binalive staff monitors the status of the sensor remotely. You only need to keep the sensor free from obstacles. No maintenance is required.

Q12: How does it work?

The sensor uses ultrasound technology. That is why it must be unobstructed.

Q13: Is the sensor waterproof?

Yes, the sensor has IP67 rating so it can withstand even water jets from pressure washers during bin washing

Q14: How can you know when the bin is emptied in order to produce reliable statistical data?

We have two approaches to determine waste collection: observing fill levels and by using RFID tags. The use of latter, since it increases the total cost of solution is offered optionally.

Q15: Do I have to buy the sensors?

No, you don’t. In fact we offer different service models based on subscription and what’s more, we are open to discuss any custom model you may have.

Q16: I’d like the user interface to ‘speak’ my own language. Is this possible?

Yes, just ask us. If it’s not already available, we’ll translate it for you.

Q17: I’d like to draw data from Binalive servers to a system of our own. Is it possible?

Yes, we provide access to our REST API upon separate agreement. What’s more, we can do custom development for you and connect our system to any system of yours that provides a standard interface such as WSDL, REST, etc.

Q18: Can I buy all the required infrastructure to run Binalive in my own premises (cloud / servers) instead of paying you monthly subscription?

Yes you can. We will also train people of your choice to run the system. You may choose to buy or not our sensors too. Then you may choose if you want to have an annual maintenance contract for 1000-2000k / year depending on your requirements for support which will include updates, patches, etc.

Q19: I like your system but I’d rather use my own sensors. Is it possible?

Generally, yes. If your sensor provides some sort of API over TCP or it runs using any of the established protocols such as MQTT or CoAP, we can develop the required middleware for you in order to ‘talk’ with Binalive.
